Golda's Balcony
The rise of Golda Meir from impoverished Russian schoolgirl to Prime Minister of Israel is one of the most amazing stories of the 20th century.
It follows the trajectory of the life of Golda Meir from Russian immigrant to American school-teacher to a leader of international politics as the fourth Prime Minister of Israel. Much of its focus is on the period surrounding the 1973 Yom Kippur War, when Israel was attacked by Egypt and Syria. This drama suggests Meir threatened Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger with the launch of nuclear weapons against her enemies, conceivably starting World War III, unless the U.S. came to her country's aid.
Dandy Barrett
Dandy Barrett began acting as an avocation while earning a living as a corporate communications executive. Her stage debut was as “one of the girls” in SWEET CHARITY at The Wilton Playshop in the early 80s. She went on to perform in Wilton, and at the Westport Community Theater and New Canaan’s Powerhouse Theater, New England Repertory Theatre and Island Stage (Nantucket), among others. Her roles have run the gamut from drama (Martha in WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF, Mrs. Venable in SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, Violet in AUGUST; OSAGE COUNTY) to comedy (Ethel in MOON OVER BUFFALO, Ouiser in STEEL MAGNOLIAS) and musicals (Desiree and Countess Charlotte in productions of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, Salome in THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM, Aurora/Spider Woman in KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN).
When Dandy retired early from corporate life, she was unable to return to Connecticut from Virginia where her career had taken her…Connecticut’s real estate values had spiked in 2006. So she retired to Savannah, Georgia, where she helped to form The Collective Face Theatre Ensemble, served as its Managing Director, and acted in more than 20 plays during her tenure.
She also has done voice-overs for A&E Biography, Dictaphone Corporation, Pitney Bowes, Victoria’s Secret, Day & Date television newsmagazine, WNBC-TV, WABC-TV, WCBS-TV, The Gayle King Show, etc. Her on-camera film work included several short films and a Tyler Perry feature.
In 2018 she returned to Connecticut to be nearer her sons and their families (one in Wilton, the other in the Boston area). Soon she was back on the boards, performing at the Ridgefield Theater Barn, TheatreWorks New Milford, and the Brookfield Theatre for the Arts. Last May she made her Sherman debut with the Sherman Players, appearing as Ethel Thayer in ON GOLDEN POND, a performance that earned a nomination for best performer in a play or musical (non- professional) in the 2023 BroadwayWorld Connecticut Awards.
Dandy is honored to have been asked to present Golda Meir in GOLDA’S BALCONY. Dandy sincerely hopes that her portrayal does this icon justice.
